(Newswire.net — November 19, 2013) Castle Rock, Colorado — Going to the dentist can be an extremely nerve racking and anxiety inducing some people. This high level of stress can force people to avoid going to the dentist all together putting their long-term health at risk. Dr. Scott Brody of Castle Rock Family Dental offers useful information about sedation dentistry to help put people at ease about going to the dentist. “Essentially sedation dentistry is a way to help reduce the anxiety of a patient that is nervous about going to the dentist,” says Dr. Brody.
Patients are given a little help to calm their nerves, “to start a typical sedation dentistry treatment, we give the patient a little valium the night before so they get a decent night’s rest.” Because the patient is able to sleep, they’re not going to be awake all night worrying about their visit to the dentist the next morning. “First thing in the morning,” says Dr. Brody, “the patient comes into the office and we administer some more medication to make sure they stay at ease.” Dr. Brody says valium is a very safe medication and people shouldn’t worry about any long term effects from taking it. “If anyone is getting a little too sedated, we have ways to bring them out of it very quickly.” Sometimes laughing gas is used as another means to keep a patient calm while dental work is being done. “Most of the time, patients are just kinda snoozing away while we’re getting their dentistry done!”
There are numerous benefits of having a calm patient in the chair. “While the patient is calm and sedated, we can actually get quite a bit of dental work done. This helps minimize the number of visits the patient has to come in for to complete a procedure.” While the patient is calm and relaxed, any number of procedures ranging from general dentistry to cosmetic dentisty procedures can be preformed. Dr. Brody says they’re constantly monitoring the patient’s pulse, blood pressure and breathing to ensure that they’re safe, “that makes us very comfortable knowing that even though they’re sleeping they’re doing quite well.” When the patient is finished, someone simply comes pick them up and take them home where they can sleep and rest with little or no memory of being at the dentist further reducing any lingering anxiety.
“Very rarely is someone not an acceptable candidate for sedation dentistry,” says Dr. Scott Brody. The patient’s viability for sedation dentistry depends on any kind of severe medical condition. “We might have to modify the treatment protocol and consult with the patient’s physician, but those are very extreme cases. Just about everybody is a good candidate for sedation dentistry!”
With sedation dentistry as an option to help reduce extreme nervousness and anxiety, Dr. Brody says there really isn’t any reason to put off visiting the dentist. “Patient’s no longer have to risk their health.” If someone feels like they are a candidate for sedation dentistry, they are encouraged to call Dr. Brody and his gentle, professional staff at Castle Rock Family Dental or visit their website. New patients are currently being accepted.
