The statistics for pet ownership in the United States has seen a steady rise for decades, and the data can be surprising for those who have not kept up with the numbers. With about 164 million dogs and cats owned in the country, that means that there is one pet owned in the US per every two human residents. This is a substantial difference from the number in 1970, where only an estimated 67 million pets were owned at the time. In 1994, the annual amount of money spent on pets across the country totaled at around $17 billion. While that might sound like a significant amount, it only took a decade to get from $17 billion in ’94 to $34.4 billion in 2004. For 2013, an estimated $55.53 will be spent on pets by the time the year is up.
What is probably the most interesting figure that comes from pet ownership is that the jumps between each year is fairly stable, only growing by a little bit annually. The difference between pet expenditures in 2001 compared to 2002 was $1 billion while the jump between 2012 and 2013 was only $2.2 billion. Even between 2008 and 2011, when the American economy was going through some of the most difficult times since the Depression, the total amount spent on pets those years still steadily increased at a little over $2 billion every year.
However, though the numbers for pets owned and money spent consistently raise on a year to year basis, that does not always translate to more informed pet owners. Looking to alleviate the knowledge problems in regards to owning pets –and dogs specifically–, a new website called Dogs Arena has been created that is already packed with a good collection of well-meaning articles ready to aid dog owners in various like caring for a puppy, rehoming dogs and the benefits of dog neutering.
