Castle Rock Area Dentist Explains Why Root Canals Are Effective

(Newswire.net — December 12, 2013) Castle Rock, Colorado — Every day we are supposed to brush and floss our teeth at least twice or after finishing meals. But it can be difficult to effectively care for those hard to reach areas. Every now and again an infection can attack a tooth and cause someone a great deal of pain and discomfort. Dr. Scott Brody of Castle Rock Family Dental in Castle Rock Colorado explains that a root canal is the most effective method for removing an infection in a tooth. “Before root canal therapies, a dentist would have to extract the tooth to prevent it from abscessing.”

Many tooth problems involve infections that spread to the pulp, which is the inner chamber of the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and other tissues. “When the infection becomes worse,” says Dr. Brody, “it can begin affecting the roots. A traumatic tooth injury can also compromise the pulp, leading to similar problems.”

“A typical root canal therapy usually requires at least one to three visits,” says Dr. Brody. During the first visit, a small hole is drilled through the top of the tooth and into the inner chamber. Once that is completed, the diseased tissue is removed and the inner chamber is cleansed and disinfected, and the tiny canals reshaped. “The cleansed chamber and canals are filled with an elastic-like material and medication.” This material is designed to prevent any future infection from taking hold and attacking the tooth. “If necessary,” says Dr. Brody, “the drilled hole is temporarily filled until a permanent seal is made with a crown.”

Usually a dentist’s first priority is to protect and retain as much of the original natural tooth material as possible. That is why extraction or a form of dental implant is used as a last resort. “Most patients who have a root canal experience little or no discomfort or pain,” says Dr. Brody, “They go on to enjoy a restored tooth that can last almost as long as its healthy original.”

If you are experiencing teeth that are overly sensitive or cause constant pain and discomfort, it is strongly recommended that you schedule an appointment with a respected and experienced dentist right away. Dr. Brody and his staff at Castle Rock Family Dental routinely provide root canals and endodontic treatments to their patients.
