Julie Schoen, yoga instructor, author, and founder of Yoginiology.com, began selling the mat bags on Amazon earlier last month after discovering them for herself after a long search for the perfect way to transport her mat from class to class and studios across town in her local Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“I had tried every bag on the planet, including ones that weren’t even bags, looking for a practical yet stylish way to carry my yoga mat,” says Schoen. “I always gave up after a few weeks with a new bag, resorting to carrying my mat by hand, because I would get so frustrated with stuck zippers, bags that were so tight it would take ten minutes just to get my mat in, and funky straps that always seemed to let my mat slip out right in the middle of the street or parking lot.”
Schoen, who is working closely with a designer in Los Angeles, was thrilled when she saw the design for a top-loading bag tote, one that was noticeably missing zippers. The bags also earn points by being made in the United States and from eco-friendly, sustainable materials.
“It’s brilliant,” she says, showing off her bag, which has plenty of room not just for her mat, but also for her water bottle, a couple books, and an extra shirt. “This bag makes packing everything for my day so simple. And, after class, there is no hassle about throwing my mat in. My hands are free, the strap is comfortable on my shoulder, and I get so many compliments it’s ridiculous.”
The yoga mat bag is currently available in two different colors on Amazon, Spicy Red and Everglade Green. Schoen says they will be adding an additional color to the line early this spring.
“I love seeing people’s reactions when they look at the bags,” says Schoen, who is showcasing her bags at a national yoga conference this week. “When you love yoga as much as I do, it’s nice to have a bag for your mat that makes your life easy and,” she adds, “is as cute as you are.”
