Local Chicago Suburbs patent attorney Heather A. Kartsounes has been admitted to present cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. Ms. Kartsounes was sworn into the Supreme Court Bar by Chief Justice Roberts on October 15, 2013.

“It was truly an honor and one of the highlights of my career as an attorney to be in the presence of the Supreme Court Justices,” said Kartsounes. Being sworn in during open court by all nine Justices is limited to less than 1% of all attorneys who are admitted to the Bar each year.

Ms. Kartsounes was part of a small group of attorneys who traveled to Washington D.C. through the Chicago Bar Association. Being a member of the Supreme Court Bar has many privileges. In addition to being authorized to file Motions before the Court and argue cases, members also have the right to sit in a reserved section of the courtroom for oral arguments, use the Court’s law library, and arrange special personal tours of the Supreme Court for family and friends.

For admission to the Supreme Court of the United States, attorneys must be sponsored by two

attorneys who have already been admitted and must obtain a certificate of good standing as

evidence that they have been a member of the Bar for three years.

Ms. Kartsounes has been an attorney since 2003. Patent attorneys, in particular, are unique

because they require admission to the Patent Bar in addition to the State Bar, and must have a degree in engineering or science.

Ms. Kartsounes received her degree in Microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before pursuing her law degree from the Chicago-Kent College of Law. Prior to founding Kartsounes Law, LLC in 2011, she served as an associate attorney at a prominent Chicago law firm and General Counsel of a publicly traded technology company. Ms. Kartsounes is a native resident of Darien, Illinois.
