(Newswire.net — April 2, 2014) Kailua, Hawaii — Two new tile murals created by Hawaii Artist Thomas Deir are finally unveiled in the Food Court of the Ala Moana Shopping Center. The unveiling of the new tile installations was for the grand opening of Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co.

The space for Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co, owned by Marshall Sakaguchi, needed a redesign for its new food service operation. During the remodel the business site has been hidden from Ala Moana’s food court patrons; until today the custom tile murals were not visible to the public. Sakaguchi was anxiously awaiting the grand opening of his business and the opportunity to display the custom designed tile murals by artist Thomas Deir.

“Mr. Sakaguchi saw my work on display and contacted me to submit a proposal, he said, ‘Thomas, your work immediately caught my attention because it fits within my theme and concept of the Blue Water Shrimp & Seafood trucks that people recognize.’ This has been a delightful commercial tile mural project. Mr. Sakaguchi trusts my skill and ability and I assumed a designer role for the overall look of the food court establishment. I would say that gratitude and appreciation have been underlying elements in this commercial tile project,” said Deir.

Deir continued, “In designing tile murals for commercial property I have to consider a variety of conditions. In this situation it is busy environment with a lot of foot traffic surrounded by many other competing businesses. I decided to emphasize the color blue from the company name, Blue Water Shrimp & Seafood Co. The first mural is a reproduction the one I designed and installed for the entrance to Hanauma Bay. The tile mural reproduction for Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co. is greatly reduced in size and is on the back wall. The second is an original tile mural, it is below the counter. The design elements in both murals include the reef and that imagery was placed on the outside edges with a lot of blue space in the center. Most of the fishes and sea creatures are shown moving toward the middle of the tile art. For each composition I wanted to draw the viewer’s eye into the business space.”

“Needless to say we are very excited about the unveiling and we are letting everyone know they can go to the Ala Moana Shopping Center Food Court to eat the delicious seafood and steaks at Blue Water Shrimp & Seafood Co. and to see the custom tile murals!” said Deir.
