Autism Awareness Fuels NASCAR Sprint Cup

On June 1st, 2014 fans enjoyed the festivities of NASCAR Sprint Cup in Dover, just like fans of every NASCAR event.   However, this race was special in one remarkable way.

In the effort to raise awareness for Autism, and therefore increasing hope for further progress toward a cure, NASCAR has dedicated this event to honoring Autism.  From the choice of who will raise the green flag, to designating a special area for families with Autistic children, this 400-mile race was like none other before.

Chosen to waive the green flag was Artie Kempner, a Wilmington native and director of FOX’s football and NASCAR coverage.  He has been extremely influential in the fight to raise awareness for Autism.  He is the founder of Autism Delaware, among other roles he passionately fulfills.

Another big honor that is uniquely special for this race is the person chosen to help Kempner give the critical command of “Drivers, Start Your Engines!”

The person selected for this honor was Joey Principe, a 17-year-old boy from Wilmington, who has Asperger’s Syndrome.   According to Joey’s father, the boy was so excited that for days before the event, it was all he could talk about.

So, for everyone in attendance of the Dover Sprint Cup, not only was the excitement of NASCAR in the air, but also the opportunity to be part of a greater community that embraces Autism.

Autism, and Autism Spectrum Disorder, is estimated to affect 1 in 68 children in America, according to the most recent statistics.  There is currently no cure.  Scientists are dedicated to understanding the condition as much as possible to find a cure.

While a true cure for Autism seems to be a long ways away, there have been some significant scientific breakthroughs.  Specifically, clinical studies show that by reducing gluten in the diet, the affected individual typically demonstrates improved neurologic behavior.

Supplements with a certain patented enzyme complex, known as DDP-IV, appear to be most promising to help in this gluten challenge.  One company forging the trail for a natural Autism cure, is Purely Scientific.  Their signature product, “3-in-1 Digestive Formula” is used by pediatricians as a valued Autism supplement.

Even though no cure is yet in sight, there is hope that science is leading the way towards a better understanding of this challenging condition.

It is events like NASCAR Sprint Cup in Dover, and commitment from people like Artie Kempner, and all of the dedicated parents passionately seeking solutions, that will really fuel the discovery of a cure for Autism.
