33 Oddball Writing Tips

(Newswire.net — July 25, 2014) Salt Lake City, UT — Newswire Network Editor in Chief has published a short paper, where he reveals 33 tips that he claims can help any writer put better words on paper.

Brown said “I have seen first-hand what it takes to write effective copy, day-in and day-out.  And I have seen what other successful word-smiths do to produce effective and painless copy.  Good writing is the key to effective communication, not just press releases, but in every part of business, from ad copy to web pages”.

The tips range from the obvious (but often overlooked):

Read. Read a lot. This makes a lot of writing tips lists. You know why? Because you cannot write well if you do not read a lot. So make time for it. Do it. Your own writing will be the better for it. What you read does not matter as long as you feel inspired by it.

 To the outlandish:

Don’t try to put lipstick on a pig. If you’re spending a lot of time trying to save an idea, a paragraph or even a sentence, it usually means it’s time to move on. Don’t waste your time trying to beautify something that’s, well, just plain ugly.

And even the ridiculous:

Hit the Jim.  Not to be confused with the Gym.  Some people call it the John, but I prefer to call it the Jim.  Personal reasons.  A daily trip to the Jim is good, more is better.

Brown also said “Many of these tips are funny, strange, and un-expected.  But, they are a summary of life lessons I have learned as a writer and editor.  Whenever I am blocked, I go back to these basics, and the words start to flow.”

One of the big take-a-ways from the paper is the idea of brevity.  Brown starts and ends the paper with the idea that a sharp editing pen is crucial to good writing, no matter the genre.

Newswire has almost 5,000 member/writers.  Although some of these tips have been part of training conducted through the years for these members, this is the first time that Brown has organized his life experience into such a fun to read digest.

You might be entertained, offended, or amused, but there is sure to be a nugget or two in this free paper that will help you improve the quality – and quantity – of your writing.  My favorite:

–          Your article needs to sleep too. Tuck it into bed and let it nap for a while. Let it get eight hours of sleep. Then look at it again. What needs to be rewritten will jump out at you.  It may need more than one nap.
