(Newswire.net — August 9, 2014) New York, NY

Saturday, August 16th, 20144 at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY, NEA Jazz Master  drummer and bandleader Jack DeJohnette, brings his latest trio featuring Ravi Coltrane and Mathew Garrison to perform at 8pm and 9:30pm. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Family of Woodstock, as will all proceeds from a planned raffle.

This concert celebrates summer, jazz and the spirit of giving. Known for superior jazz performance and also a big supporter of Ulster County, NY charities, Jack DeJohnette brings this new trio to the Bearsville Theatre in Woodstock NY via “Jazzstock” the concert producing team of Teri Roiger and John Menegon.

Family Of Woodstock has been in the business of serving the Ulster County, NY area residents with many different kinds of services. One of the landmarks in the actual town of Woodstock, located just off the green (for those who are familiar with the town of Woodstock), Family has been serving the community since the early 70’s with shelters, emergency food pantries, legal services advocacy, counseling, hotlines, childcare and case management services. Their hotline is one of the longest continually running hot lines in the United States.

Donations are always accepted at the “free store” located at 16 Rock City Rd, Woodstock, NY and someone is always there with a helping hand. A non profit organization, and an anchor for the upstate community, Family serves everyone and helps families in crisis, domestic violence situations and any crisis, with emotional support, physical support and financial support.

This concert highlights the work of Family and brings attention to the needs of the community, with music spearheaded by this new trio Mr. DeJohnette has assembled. Fresh off touring Europe and the United States in the past month, the band will, no doubt, jazz the house.

Jack DeJohnette celebrates over 50 years of jazz playing with his always energetic, always inspired performances. He has been working with Mr. Coltrane and Mr. Garrison for the past few years and put together a repertoire of the newer sounds of jazz improvisation with the time honored presentation of “the jazz trio.”

DeJohnette has lived in the Woodstock area for many years and his devotion to community, family and music continue to inspire and bring the community together. Noted for his compositions and his dedication to the art of jazz and jazz education, his contributions to American music are the gold standard to which many an aspiring jazz musician wish to emulate.

Noticeably absent is a chordal instrument, and here DeJohnette may surprise the audience by sitting at the piano and offering his pianistic interpretations of the band’s material.

Ravi Coltrane’s tenor and soprano saxophone contributions are crystalline gems. With a focused reedy sound, lightening facility on both horns and a unique musical dexterity, Ravi Coltrane is a pure example of how the jazz tradition is evolving.

No longer just “be-bop” or just “free jazz” or “modern jazz”, Coltrane fuses every stylistic nuance and creates an individual voice that reminds one of Picasso meets Ravel, with sound instead of paint and canvas.  http://www.ravicoltrane.com

Mathew Garrison on electric bass and electronics, rounds out the trio with an “electric sensitivity.”

Shooting notes responding to the drums punctuate the music with an aura of excitement and creating a feeling of “walking on the landscape of the moon.”

With roots in Upstate NY and Rome, Italy and now a resident of Brooklyn, Garrison brings the quality of restless invention coupled with an astute knowledge of tradition together in an urgent and sensuous way making each performance engaging and inviting.

Garrison is also the founder of “Shapeshifter Lab”, a multi discipline performance space/gallery in Brooklyn, NY. It has become the home of many of New York’s creative leaders and an interesting place to check out for those with adventurous musical tastes.
