For more than two decades, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, known widely and affectionately as “Dr. Beach”, has studied, appraised, and ranked beaches in coastal areas all over the planet. In addition to his yearly rating of North America’s finest beaches, he works diligently to raise consciousness about the hazards of rip currants around the globe.
This year was no different, but this year, Dr. Beach also talked about the best beaches in the world that won’t appear on his famous list because they are not located in the United States. One such beach was in Costa Rica.
Dr. Stephen P. Letherman, is Professor and Director of the laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida international University. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental (Coastal) Sciences from the University of Virginia, and completed his undergraduate degree in Geosciences at North Carolina State University.
Fifty standards are used to appraise the beaches; among them water and sand quality, as well as safety and environmental management, are included. Dr. Leatherman is known internationally as a coastal researcher who has published numerous books and hundreds of scientific reports and articles about coastal erosion and ways to better beach conditions and safety.
Of Costa Rica, Dr. Beach said, “I was just in Costa Rica and I really liked the beaches… on the Pacific side.”
