Interview with Dr. Bartoletti about the new VisiOffice System technology at Vista Eye Care in Green Valley, Arizona

1) Please describe what the Visioffice System is used for and give a basic sense of how it works.

The VisiOffice system uses digital images with tracking sensors to precisely measure many aspects of the patient’s eyeglasses.  Using tracking sensors on the frame and corneal reflections, the VisiOffice takes two pictures.  These two images are used to create a 3-D image.  With the 3-D image the Visioffice measures the different characteristics of the frame fit that affect the patient’s vision.

In addition to taking hyper-accurate and thorough measurements, the VisiOffice has many educational reference tutorials and videos for the patient.  These can be used to help further explain recommendations made by our eye doctors.

The Visioffice also takes digital images and video of the patient while trying on different frame selections.  Since many patients have trouble seeing what they look like in the mirror when they are trying on new frames, being able to view these digital images while wearing his or her current glasses is very helpful.

2) Why are the 20 different measurements that the Visioffice System is able to record so important in helping patients come out with the best glasses to correct their vision?

The Visioffice system helps by measuring all the different parameters of the frame fit that affect the patient’s visual clarity and experience.   The newest technology progressive lenses have capabilities like never before with new lens design and manufacturing techniques.  In the digital age of lens manufacturing we can account for more than just the traditional 2-dimensional measurements of pupillary distance and progressive segment height.

With 3-dimensional measurements we can account for the distance between the glasses lenses and the eyes, the curvature of the frame front, the tilt of the lenses, the Eye Rotation Center and head posture angle  to name a few.  These factors all play a significant role in the outcome of a patient’s vision with his new glasses.

3) What types of significant problems or pitfalls does the Visioffice System help deter in fitting glasses for patients?

The Visioffice can help avoid manual measurement errors that can result in poor vision, visual discomfort and misaligned near segments.

4) Most practices in your area do not have this cutting-edge technological capability.  What is it about this particular technology that you find most exciting; the component that made you feel you need to invest in this for your practice?

The technology employs the highest level of accuracy available to take all the necessary measurements. It very accurately and quickly takes measurements that are very challenging and time consuming to do correctly using manual methods.  It has a very helpful function that allows a patient to see what they look like in prospective frames when they can’t see themselves without their glasses.  The educational and demonstration tools are very helpful to communicate many of a patient’s lens and frame options.

5) Can you describe the patient experience when using the Visioffice System?

Patients are often WOWed by the level of technology and accuracy of the Visioffice.  They are excited about the additional attention to detail provided by the new technology lenses and measurements that go with them.

The patients with strong prescriptions often exclaim, “I’ve never been able to see what I look like in my new frames until after the lenses were made!”  This function is so easy to use to compare side by side images of the patient wearing different frames.  Patients find this very helpful when selecting new frames.  The Visioffice can also playback video of the patients.

6) Do the patients that walk through your doors day in and day out appreciate the upgrade in technology?

Almost every patient appreciates the level of technology we employ.

7) How does this technology ultimately improve patients vision with new glasses?

In addition to the answers to questions 1 and 2, the ultimate improvement can be experienced with sharper peripheral vision, smoother and wider reading areas and reduced or eliminated swimming effect.

8) For what patients do you use the Visioffice System?  Are there certain patients that you need this technology more for in order to meet their needs?

The Visioffice can be used for all patients.  However, it is especially useful for patients needing progressive lenses and those with high prescriptions.

9) Can you share a particular story in which, by using the added capabilities of the Visioffice System, you were able to help a patient in a way that simply would not have been possible without it?

I once had a patient that had very sensitive vision that had difficulties in the past adapting to new lenses that were even just slightly off perfect.  He dreaded getting new eyeglasses due to the challenges in satisfying his visual needs.  With his current glasses falling apart and having no choice but to take the plunge, the patient set up an appointment for a new exam.

With the Visioffice we were able to take the patient’s measurements within a tenth of a millimeter accuracy. This gave us the level of precision we needed to ensure that he would be able to see clearly and comfortably with his new glasses.  He subsequently had a great experience with his new eyeglasses and no longer has a fear of buying new glasses as long as this technology is available.
