(Newswire.net — September 29, 2014) Darien, CT —  Your child gets hit in the head with a soccer ball. You watch in horror as he or she goes down on the field. The coaches and the referee run over to peruse the situation. After a few minutes they stand and your child walks off the field to a clapping crowd. You breathe a sigh of relief. After all they look normal, or are they?

You simply cannot take a head injury lightly these days. There is so little we actually know about the brain and all it’s wonderful functions. A seemingly slight head bump could be a serious hematoma. Your childs’ innocent injury might actually be a serious concussion. If you feel strongly enough that they don’t require medical attention then you need to watch and look for what I am about to tell you.

First, you may be making a big mistake by not seeking medical attention. There may not be anything wrong in your eyes but a doctor is better at really making an accurate diagnosis. Re-think the matter. You may even want to refer your child to the school nurse. It would be terrible to think that you did not do everything in your power to help your child. We all have regrets as parents do not let this be one of them.

Pay close attention to your child after a head injury. Have you seen any changes in their personality? This is a symptom that you might not have considered a sign that there was indeed a traumatic brain injury. If you notice that your son or daughter has an different personality or a personality change then you must seek medical attention.

Has your child appeared to be confused lately? You will want to have them looked at professionally as this too is another sign of post concussion injury. As stated earlier , we know so little about the brain. When there are subtle changes after a concussion they need to be evluated. Has your otherwise happy child become angry all of a sudden? You guessed it, another symptom of a concussion.

Try and understand that a bumped head might not be so simple. A head injury presents with a host of varying symptoms. Instead of waiting to look for some of these subtle changes think about getting your child seen right away. We all want to rest easy and if we do everything in our power to protect our children’s health we can.
