Fire Safety Inspectors Cracking Down on Businesses

San Francisco, Calif. (December 15, 2014) — San Francisco is becoming stricter on violations for annual and five-year safety inspections. Therefore, businesses should be prepared for these inspections. With fines of $500 and up, for improper fire-safety regulations, this staggering cost is not to be taken lightly. With filing a complaint being as simple as logging on to the department of building inspection website, building owners and company leaders alike need to make sure they are meeting requirements set by the city.

In addition to scheduled inspections, local fire codes and insurance companies may require more frequent testing. What most people do not know is that a district fire safety expert can conduct their own inspection of a building without making contact or even giving notice to the owner or manager. If the inspector finds that a violation exists, or has not been resolved, then the building owner or manager can be given a Correction Notice or Notice of Violation fine that would be detrimental to their business.

“One of the San Francisco Fire Department missions is to help building owners and managers maintain their properties to reduce the fire risk to occupants and the building. This goal is reached through fire safety education, inspection and enforcement,” said Thomas Harvey in his article titled Burning Questions. With this being said, San Francisco takes enforcement of fire safety standards seriously.

Many business owners are not sure what they can do to protect themselves, so they are not held liable. Safety procedures that are critical to look at during an inspection include making sure smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers work correctly, and a well-thought-out exit-plan strategy is in place.

With day-to-day business operations being enough to handle, it is always good to have an expert handle your fire safety inspection needs. Aura Fire Safety is known for staying up-to-date on changes in protocol, insurance and permit requirements, and has trained its team to look for all the necessary updates during fire code inspection–so that businesses and their building occupants will be not only safe, but covered under the law.

An example of Aura’s commitment to keeping Bay Area residents safe is its fire alarm system service check. Aura Fire Safety states: “The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) mandates that your fire alarm systems, in protected premises, be tested regularly. . . AFS, Inc. staff of trained technicians can annually, or semi-annually, inspect not only your fire alarm systems, but other safety systems and equipment for your business to insure that it meets area standards. We make sure, in the event of a fire, your alarm system works properly and alerts anyone in your building to evacuate.”

The expectations may seem daunting–but it boils down to the importance of businesses staying up-to-date with all the requirements necessary to keep them safe and not get in trouble with the law, which most businesses would agree are both important considerations.
