(Newswire.net — December 12, 2014) — Piling up military arsenal near borders never helped to preserve peace. Contrary, it only provokes other said and raises chances of a serious conflict. How serious, depends on the countries. If the countries, however, are US and Russia, the conflict may easily become an Armageddon.
The crisis in Cuba, in the mid 60’s threaten to became full scale nuclear war as the SSSR deployed missiles, presumably with nuclear warheads, that were too close to US border. US President Kennedy was inches away from ordering a full-scale invasion of Cuba, in order to destroy the threat. At last moment, Kruschev and Kennedy made a compromise. SSSR pulled back the missiles from Cuba and US agreed to leave the Cubans alone.
More than 50 years later, the US deploys its weaponry, armed forces and fighter jets near the Russian border. A freight train carrying a whole column of American armored vehicles has been caught on camera in the Latvian Railway Station in Dalbe, less than 300km (180 miles) from the Russian border.
Reportedly, the train was carrying at least 38 vehicles and several semitrailers, including eight Bradley Fighting Vehicles, nine M113 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), four petrol tankers, Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTTs), High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), an M88 Hercules Armory recovery vehicle. Also, a couple of trucks, some tactical engineering and medical vehicles, at least four containers and a pair of railcars with ammunition.
According to Latvian authorities, the train with the US Army 1st Cavalry Division was just passing through to its final destination in Lithuania, within the framework of the US ‘Operation Atlantic Resolve’ effort, established to reassure American allies in Eastern Europe anxious about a “resurgent Russia.”
American armored vehicles have been sent to the Baltic States and Poland for military maneuvers, however, they are set to remain for the constant training of local troops and rotation of US forces.
Deployment of NATO military in the Baltic States to ensure stability in the region, would do anything but that. Meanwhile, the officials in Moscow have kept quiet.
