Water Pipe Break From Freezing Temperatures

(Newswire.net — January 13, 2015) Centerville, Utah — The Flood Co.,  Northern Utah’s premier water damage restoration experts, were called to 1710 South Foothill Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 31st. Strong east winds mixed with freezing temperatures resulted in 17 pipes bursting at the All Saints Episcopal Church. The resulting water leak flooded the main level of the church, as well as the basement.

The water spread through the night flooding a total of 16 rooms. The main chapel has water damage as well as 4 bathrooms and 11 additional areas totaling over 4,000 square feet of water damage. Wet carpets and walls are the main damage resulting from the pipe breaks.

East winds are nothing new in Utah. Mixed with the freezing cold weather, the winds penetrated the brick exterior and froze the pipes in the walls resulting in the breaks. East winds are nothing new to Utah. Our canyons funnel the east winds. These winds are strongest in the Davis County area. In December 2011, Utah experienced stronger than normal east winds. These winds caused a lot of damage to the property and surrounding areas. Pipe breaks, downed trees and power lines, as well as roof and damage to fences. The east winds in David County can reach in excess of 90 MPG gusts. These strong winds blow over semi trucks on I-15 through the David County area. These recent winds, combined with very cold temperatures froze the pipes inside the walls. The insulation in the walls had previously been enough to prevent freeze damage to the property for decades. The Flood Co. emergency response team arrived and started the extraction and drying process.

Property insurance will typically cover water damage events such as these. Most water damage events do not require you to contact your insurance company before contacting a remediation company to begin the work. Most insurance companies require the property owner to call someone and begin repair work as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Water damage should never be ignored. Without proper drying and cleanup in a timely manner, the damage will likely get worse. Dampness can lead to mold. If the drying process is not started within 48 hours, mold can begin to grow. Once there is extensive mold growth, your only option is removal. This results in a larger repair cost as well as longer repair times.

The Flood Co., a BBB accredited company, started the drying process with a total of 74 fans and 7 extra large dehumidifiers. “Without the fans moving the air and the dehumidifiers extracting moisture from the air, the property would not dry before mold has time to start growing. These fans will remain at the church for as long as needed to ensure the structure is dry.” said Daryl Olsen, Owner of The Flood Co. “We will restore the church to pre-water damage conditions.”

All Saints Episcopal Church previously avoided water damage when a water main broke and flooded a number if surrounding businesses in the Foothill Drive area.  The water did not flood the church, while other businesses had extensive damage. It would seem Foothill Drive has seen its fair share of disaster over the last couple of months.

The damage to the property is estimated to be in excess of $20,000.
