(Newswire.net — May 8, 2015) Singapore, Singapore — Candace Fleming is an award-winning author with Simon and Schuster who has written more than 35 books, both fiction and nonfiction. Fleming developed her passion for writing at an early age and has enjoyed much success as an author. While she has become highly recognized for her work, the path was not easy. It took three years and multiple rejections before her first book was published.

A self-described storyteller, Candace Fleming developed a passion for storytelling at an early age. Her parents recognized the talent their daughter had and encouraged her to write her stories down. She did so, filling notebooks with poems, stories, and plays. Fleming confesses, “Once I began writing, I couldn’t stop.” The author still has many of the notebooks, a cherished record of her early writing years.

As Fleming passed through school she continued to write but gave no consideration to becoming an author. Upon applying to college Fleming chose history, not writing, as her major. In hindsight Fleming recognizes that her choice still influenced her career stating that history, “is really just an extension of my love of stories”. It wasn’t until Fleming became a mother and began reading to her children that she discovered the “joy and music” of children’s books.

After countless trips to the library and reading “stacks of books” to her boys, the idea struck Fleming to try her hand at writing children’s books. But Fleming admits that she wrote for several years penning many stories only to be turned down by publisher after publisher until her first book was published. She is now with the publishing house Simon and Schuster. Her passion and dedication is a testament to the author’s determination and is reflected in the career she has created for herself with her award-winning books.

Fleming has earned a variety of awards for her work including the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Golden Kite Award, and the California Young Reader Medal (for her books The Lincolns, Amelia Lost: The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and Boxes for Katje, respectively). Most recently she is the recipient of the Orbis Pictus Winner for Outstanding Children’s Nonfiction for her book, the Family Romanov, and is an anticipated recipient for a Newbery Award. Fleming described her career as an author as the “perfect way” to combine all the things she loves,“ stories, musical language, history, and reading.” The awards are really an added bonus for such a fulfilling career.

Candace Fleming recently presented at the iCreate Conference hosted at Singapore American School and was the Author-in-Residence. If you would like more information about Candace Fleming and to learn about her books, visit her website.
