(Newswire.net — May 15, 2015) Bryan, TEXAS — Garrett Mechanical, Inc. has announced it provided key support in the development of the Portable, Continuous, Miniature and Modular (PCMM) platform by G-CON Manufacturing, GEA Pharma Systems, and Pfizer. The system includes continuous process equipment, control systems, and portable, self-contained GMP modules (PODs) used to produce bulk tablets in a cleanroom setting. Garrett Mechanical installed the HVAC duct work for the air handlers, exhaust systems, and piping connections for stacking the multiple modular sections together. The air handler units and exhaust systems support the controlled environments within each PCMM.
In addition, contractors with GMI ran domestic water, waste lines, and gas piping through different sections, according to Bear Weedon, Project Manager at Garrett Mechanical. Connections were installed so equipment could be used at different locations. Piping connections were strategically placed to aid installers tying the PCMM sections together once shipped on site.
Each PCMM is designed to be a self-contained manufacturing space. It can be rapidly constructed, deployed, disassembled, and moved, enabling drug batches to be produced in specific locations. Expected to transform pharmaceutical process development and manufacturing, the flexible solution is a cost-effective alternative to expensive, inflexible manufacturing facilities and equipment. The innovative system provides the flexibility for in-country and small-lot manufacturing.
“Garrett Mechanical has been part of some of the most prestigious construction projects in Texas for over 25 years,” said Larry Garrett, Vice President of Garrett Mechanical. “This time, we’ve contributed to a technology at the forefront of future pharmaceutical development and manufacturing practices. From the ductwork for air handlers used to control the internal environment to critical utility connections, our services have been essential for the PCMM platform’s development.”
The PCMM platform supports a full range of biomanufacturing equipment. In April, it was recognized as Best Technology Innovation at the INTERPHEX Exhibitor Awards for 2015. The award recognizes the cutting-edge technology supporting the goals and objectives of the modern biopharmaceutical company.
Since 1988, Garrett Mechanical, Inc. has covered the full spectrum of contracting services, from general construction jobs to site utilities. It has succeeded in such prestigious projects as the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and the University of Texas Health Science Center. The company employs over 250 of the best-trained workers in the mechanical contracting industry and can take on the most complex of projects.
