(Newswire.net — August 19, 2015) Singapore, Singapore — Having written 18 books, owned several publishing companies, written for the stage and television, recorded a CD, performed at schools and conferences around the world, produced jazz and book festivals, hosted a weekly radio show, worked for the U.S. Government, and taught in a high school, Kwame Alexander’s next stop is Singapore. A world traveler, Alexander has led a delegation of writers and artists to Italy, Brazil, and Ghana, and is now coming to the Singapore American School (SAS) to conduct creative writing workshops and to share his poetry and books with middle and high school students. He will be at SAS from Friday, August 14 to Wednesday, September 2, 2015 as part of SAS’ academic visitors-in-residence program.
SAS’ Parent Teacher Association (PTA) supports learning by providing resources that enhance the curriculum, including funding for artists-in-residence. Visiting writers, musicians, dancers, theater professionals, and visual artists and illustrators come into students’ classrooms, work on craft, interactive activities, and idea generation with them, and provide teachers with professional development opportunities.
Alexander will be spending a week with the middle schoolers and one and a half weeks with high schoolers, workshopping with students who will write poems in class in small groups, and writing alongside the writer. This is a great privilege for SAS students who have already read Alexander’s poems and already know his work.
Teacher Scott Riley said, “He’s electrifying. Sometimes he’ll break into poetry in his speech. He brings a unique voice to SAS from a different background than a lot of our students. The authenticity of his stories and poems opens our eyes to important perspectives, and he will share how he gets those ideas with us. That really has an impact on students, and is the whole idea behind the writer-in-residence program.”
