100 Million Meals Challenge for Hunger Action Month

(Newswire.net — August 18, 2015) Franklin, TN –Many people believe that hunger only affects a certain population or area. The reality is that hunger affects the whole country’s ability to thrive. While more than half (54%) of all client households have a member that has worked for pay in the past 12 months, these households still experience difficulties in meeting their basic need of feeding themselves and their families.

Today, Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. This is a powerful and efficient network of two hundred food banks across the country. As food insecurity rates hold steady at the highest levels ever, the Feeding America network of food banks has risen to meet the need. They feed 46 million people at risk of hunger, including 12 million children and 7 million seniors.

This week, A Womans Day Magazine features an article about Tony Robbins’ 100 Million Meals Challenge with Feeding America.

“I was a kid, and my alcoholic parents were fighting. My father, a metal tools salesman, lacked confidence in his ability to be a good provider, and my mom enjoyed making it clear that he wasn’t. It was Thanksgiving, and we had no dinner.” explains Tony.

He goes on to tell us that there was a knock at the door and when Tony opened the door he was given a box of food by a tall stranger.

“I had no idea where it came from, but I was elated.” continues Tony.  

But all his dad saw was a handout. 

“We don’t take charity” his father barked, and went to shut the door.

But the man stuck out his foot. ‘Someone wants you to have this,’ he said. ‘Don’t let your ego get in the way of taking care of your family.’ 

Tony’s father took the meal and slammed the door without thanking the stranger. A few days later, he left Tony’s mother and the family for good. 

“That Thanksgiving delivery changed my future, and turned the worst time of my life, my dad leaving, into the best time, because it taught me who I didn’t want to become…and who I did.”​ says Tony who has since made the largest donation ever from an individual to Feeding America.

This year Tony has created the 100 Million Meals Challenge, which will feed 100 million meals to the hungry by the end of 2015. As of August, the Challenge has raised 80 million meals, 50 million of which was Robbins’ personal donation. 

Tony now invites us to help match his gift of 50 million meals to Feeding America so that together, we can provide one hundred million meals for the 49 million Americans who struggle with hunger. When combined with Tony’s gift, every $1 that we give, will help secure and distribute twenty meals through the Feeding America network of food banks.

Tony Robbins’ 50 million meals has a a monetary equivalent of $5,000,000. This amount will be used to double the impact of gifts made in response to the online campaign from December 2, 2014 — December 3, 2015.
