(Newswire.net — September 10, 2015) — For the second year in a row, the Floridae Charity Group has launched the Cubby House Competition, a campaign to help needy children by auctioning top children’s playhouses by noted builders.

This year, Michael Koundouris of the Koundouris Group a significant sponsor of the charity’s event hopes to help the group achieve its goal of making the Cubby House Competition an annual event.

The Floridae Charity Group was begun when founder Peter Sutton and landscape designer Chris De Bruine developed a proposal for a floral display that would celebrate the Bicentenary of Australia as well as the 75th birthday of Canberra in 1998.  The inaugural presentation, which was a stunning floral display of exotic bulbs and annuals beside Lake Burley Griffin in Commonwealth Park in Canberra, ushered in an annual celebration of spring.

The community embraced the idea, and every year since then participation has grown.  Every year, citizens and patrons created new arrangements of garden beds to portray a theme.  Visitors have been amazed and delighted at the month-long spectacle, which includes music, cultural celebrations, workshops on horticulture, art displays and entertainment as well as recreational activities.  More than one million blooms are visible in Commonwealth Park, and entry is free to everyone.  More than 400,000 people visit Canberra each year to take part.

For the past two years, the Cubby House Competition has been a central part of Floriade, with several Canberra builders vying for top honors and generating money to help The Centenary Hospital for Women and Children and Boundless Canberra.  Michael Koundouris and the Koundouris Group were instrumental in helping to make the event a success.  Last year’s event featured an auction of the five best cubby houses, and this year’s event used a similar format.  By donating time and expertise, Koundouris and his group ensured that the event was a success.

The Cubby Auction will take place on the final day of Floriade – Sunday 12th of October 2015 at 1.45pm.
