(Newswire.net — September 21, 2015) Lakewood, CO —A new promising treatment helps repair brain damage caused by mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with a patent-pending near-infrared light therapy (NILT) applied directly to the brain, penetrating the skin and skull to regenerate brain cell functioning. According to doctors at the Neuro-Laser Foundation, this represents a “medical breakthrough” in the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI), which plagues millions of athletes, military veterans and first-responder professionals.

Due to anticipated high demand for the service, equipment and ongoing research, two of the researchers have introduced an opportunity to help those troubled with TBI through the “Say Goodbye TBI” campaign.

Both founders of the Neuro-Laser Foundation, Theodore Henderson, MD, PhD and Larry Morries, DC, authored the studies demonstrating the effectiveness of the near-infrared light therapy (NILT) on patients troubled by TBI. The following studies were published this month in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, Summer issue.

Near-infrared photonic energy penetration: can infrared phototherapy effectively reach the human brain? Henderson TA & Morries LD.  The study showed high-powered, multi-watt infrared light achieved at least 3 cm penetration into the brain. This included wavelengths of 980 and 808 nm with 9-13 Watts average power. No thermal skin irritation occurred, and skin temperature change was negligible.

Treatments for traumatic brain injury with emphasis on transcranial near-infrared laser phototherapy. Morries LD, Cassano P, Henderson TA. The second study found that a specific high-powered, near infrared light can effectively mitigate clinical symptoms of TBI after penetrating the skin and skull. All the patients in the study reported significant clinical improvement in their condition with no negative side effects.

The second study occurred from 2011-2013 with 10 people diagnosed with chronic mild-to-moderate TBI as a result of involvement in athletics, military activities or as first-responders. The treatments included 10 to 20 transcranial applications of high-power NIR over the course of two months. Using a Class IV laser and pulsed light, each treatment took less than 60 minutes.

“This is a watershed moment in history,” Dr. Henderson said. “We’ve shown how to identify the area affected by TBI, and how to reach that specific area with a healing light, and the results are outstanding.”

Dr. Henderson envisions helping numerous Veterans, active and retired professional athletes, as well as military personnel, and first-responders. Therefore, the foundation is seeking funding for a major research and operating initiative. More information available here.

“TBI is a serious condition that affects millions of people every year who sustain a concussion, and may not realize the impact it’s having on their lives,” said Dr. Henderson, referring to the Center for Disease Control reports of more 2.5 million concussion and TBI emergency visits occur annually. “Moreover, many of those with depression may have a TBI as the root cause…so now there’s hope — and a light — for those caught in the darkness of depression.”

Do you have TBI?

According to Dr. Henderson, symptoms of persistent TBI can include headaches, speech irregularities, confusion, memory slips, lack of impulse control, sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, and for some, suicide ideation.

The Neuro-Laser Foundation (NLF) is a non-profit organization, based in Denver, Colorado, dedicated to transforming lives of those distraught with various psychiatric and neurological conditions, some resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Building on more than 30 years of studying the effects of near-infrared light on cells and tissues, the Foundation is advancing technology and treatment approaches that will increase quality of life factors for people impacted by traumatic brain injury.
