(Newswire.net — October 16, 2015) Henderson, Nevada — Children’s author Dr. Annmarie Edwards will give free books to children as part of her literacy campaign at the Las Vegas Book Festival on Saturday, October 17th, 2015 during the book fair, to encourage reading and build their literacy skills.

“An important skill in life is learning to read,” said Dr. Edwards, author of Peewee the lady bug and the Jamaica Freedom Jamboree. Giving children free books will help them develop their literacy skills, love for reading and their success in school and life.

According to University of Michigan, a child’s reading skills are important to their success in school and work.  Reading begins at home and parents’ role is important to their children’s success.

“Reading opens a new world and help children experience different culture, build self-confidence, comprehension and communication skills,” said Dr. Edwards.

UNESCO.org, reported that globally 250 million children of primary school age, whether they are in school or not, lack basic reading and writing skills.  Learning to read has many benefits, such as, giving an individual the ability to participate in life, access health care system and build economic stability for the government.

Dr. Edwards’s literacy campaign is one way to help children who lag behind in their reading improve their literacy skills and prevent school drop outs.  Giving children books to read will help their early literacy skills development and build great readers for the future. Dr. Edwards is urging her community to participate in this event by donating used children’s book.
