(Newswire.net — October 30, 2015) Darien, CONNECTICUT — The world literature is filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of papers detailing studies on the use of low-power lasers to treat various conditions. The condition we are addressing today is headaches. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has only been used in the United States since 2002, although it has been used widely in Europe and Asia for many years.
At a wave length of 830 nanometers the high powered light infuses energy 5 centimeters deep. In the case of headaches and migraines the light energizes the cells that line the small blood vessels called arterioles. The cells induce production of nitric oxide which relaxes the cell wall reducing the painful constriction of the blood vessel. As a matter of fact this is the same desired mechanism of the popular drugs Cialis and Viagra. Less restriction on the cell wall allows for better blood flow.
The laser will “desensitize” local nociceptors, thereby decreasing or eliminating pain at the site. A nociceptor is a sensory receptor for painful stimuli. This yet another benefit of laser therapy. There is also some evidence that the laser beam will decrease inflammation, especially chronic inflammation adding more scientific weight to validating this form of therapy.
An area of interest to many doctors and researchers on the topic of headaches is the sphenopalatine ganglion. The reason it is of such importance is the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) is a collection of nerve cells that is closely associated with the trigeminal nerve, which is the primary nerve involved in headaches and migraines. disorders.
By aiming the low level laser at the sphenopalatine ganglion the migraine or headache sufferer can reap significant relief with having to rely on medications that are mostly palliative at best. The headaches can be relieved long term with continued treatment.
The end result is that headaches and migraines and the resultant misery can benefit from a therapy with virtually no side effects. This is being done right now and while anecdotal in nature I am happy to report the results have been tremendous. The use of cold laser to alleviate migraines and headaches is promising and warrants further studies. The question that remains is how do you get a pharmaceutical company to back a study of something they can not sell? The answer is it probably won’t get very far without a grass roots type of movement.I urge to go out and find out more about the uses of low level laser light therapy.
