(Newswire.net — January 24, 2016) — That doesn’t sound alarming until you add the fact that hospital admittance for food allergies went up 500% between 1990 and 2006. More recent reports indicate that the problem is getting worse instead of better.
Science is looking for a cause for this jump in not only the number of people with food allergies, but also the seriousness of those allergies. Many point to the increase in pesticide use on our crops, and subsequently in our water supplies and soils. Others point to the over use of antibiotics in our meat supplies, as well as our eggs and dairy. Still others point to the abundance of processed foods eaten today, with a corresponding lack of whole fresh foods. Antibacterial products such as soaps, toothpastes and cosmetics, as well as chlorinated water could also be among the culprits. Add to that the role Vitamin D plays in developing the immune system. Then there’s always those pesky GM foods. We don’t know what they are doing to us.
So what’s a body to do?
Evidence shows that prevention is the best recourse, and that prevention starts in the womb. If mom keeps her immune system strong, avoids antibiotics and takes probiotics during her pregnancy then the child will have a 12% lower chance of developing food allergies. Add to that breast feeding and introducing whole foods that have not been processed and the chances for developing food allergies are even lower. Avoiding or postponing antibiotics and vaccines also decrease the odds. Feeding the child fermented foods or probiotics is also helpful.
That doesn’t help the fifty year old that is suffering from food allergies. Once they have started there are some good ways to either live with them, or get rid of them.
Symptoms of food allergies can range from headaches, rashes, diarrhea, vomiting to internal bleeding and anaphylactic shock.
Because Leaky Gut Syndrome is a leading cause of food allergies in adults healing the gut is all important in healing the allergies. With Leaky Gut the things mentioned above have injured the lining of the intestines and have allowed food particles to enter the bloodstream. Since they are unfamiliar to the immune system it develops antibodies to the foods, and an allergy is born. To heal the gut you first have to quit injuring it, then you have to begin eating a diet that heals it. One such diet is called the GAPS diet. There are also products that can improve the breakdown of the foods, thus improving digestion, as well as coating, soothing and healing the intestines.
Another approach is called Provocation Neutralization. This is a more modern version of the old allergy shots that doctors used to give. In this treatment a doctor would administer an infinitesimal amount of what you are allergic to. Medical staff would be on hand to counteract any reaction you would have. Only when you don’t have a reaction would the amount be increased.
A lesser known approach is a process is a chiropractic process called BioSet. Using a type of acupressure technique the body’s reaction is short circuited or reset.
Something you can do at home is to manage your diet. If you know what your triggers are you can design your diet to stay away from them. If you don’t know your triggers you will want to start an elimination diet to feel better and to figure out what your triggers are. Start by taking your diet down to the bare basics of foods least likely to cause a reaction. Many people feel like the Whole 30 diet is a good one for this. Others feel even that program is not restrictive enough. It depends on what your triggers are as to how far down to basics you really have to get. One key would be to eliminate all processed foods, because you can never be sure exactly what is in them. Our laws allow minute particles of things to be included without being on the ingredients. If you have a food allergy even a minute particle could bring on a reaction.
Food allergies can make life uncomfortable, and eating out dangerous. Through figuring out your triggers you can decide whether one of the recovery methods make sense or just be happy to live a life of avoidance.
