(Newswire.net — February 1, 2016) — Sanitation is the biggest factor in getting roach infestations under control. Meaning, how the restaurant or food processing facility maintains cleanliness in their establishment.

Roaches live off of bacteria and like to hide out in warm areas such as electrical outlets. Cracks and crevices are a common hiding area for different types of roaches like the American roach, the German roach, the brown-band roach, and many more.

Not only do roaches live off of bacteria, but they also spread it. There are tons of allergies and bacteria that are spread through cockroaches because of how fast they move. They travel at about three miles per hour, which shows just how fast they could spread a disease.

Cockroaches can make themselves at home in most places. They are very adaptable creatures. Although they favor the warmth, they can also live in areas as cold as 32 degrees Fahrenheit. They can go without eating for about a month, but cannot live without water for more than a week.

Most of the time, cockroaches are found in kitchens. This is because the conditions are an almost perfect habitat for them to live in. Kitchens are warm areas where they can make a home with easy access to food, numerous of places to hide, and access to water sources.

Once cockroaches make their way into your restaurant, it is hard to get rid of them. They like to hide in cracks and other small places, only coming out at night, so spotting them can be incredibly difficult. So instead of playing hide and seek, here are some tips you can use to prevent roaches from coming into your restaurant in the first place.

1. Keep all food stored in tightly sealed containers.

2. Sweep floors at least once a day to make sure there is no food or garbage left on the floor.

3. Always throw trash in dumpsters outside as soon as it is ready to be taken out.

4. Make sure trash containers are closed so that no roaches can crawl into it.

5. Seal off all the cracks that could be present, including ones for utilities.

6. Take care of any leaks as soon as they occur.

7. If your restaurant has a basement, make sure it is well ventilated and stays dry.

8. Be sure to toss away excess cardboard and any wet cardboard. Roaches love to eat cardboard.

Even if you use all of these tips, some cockroaches can still find their way inside. If you end up with a roach infestation, call your local pest control center like UltraPro Pest Protection. They will get rid of your infestation and help you keep the roaches out for good.
