The LED Light Has Been Around For Over 50 Years

These first visible-light LEDs were low intensity and were limited to the color red.  It was not until 1995 that the first LED with white light from luminescence conversion was produced.  This white light LED  was then introduced into the commercial marketplace two years later.

Although LED technology has been around for over 50 years, it is the fairly recent development of white LEDs which has made it a popular alternative to other white light sources

There are many advantages which LED lights offer.  LEDs are an energy efficient source of light with the typical LED requiring only 30 to 60 milliwatts to operate.  Unlike glass bulb lamp types, LEDs are very durable and shockproof.  And the directional design of LEDs is helpful in reducing unnecessary light pollution as when installed on streetlights.

Other advantages that LEDs have over incandescent light sources include lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, smaller size, improved physical robustness and faster switching.

The LED is a light source which uses semiconductors and electroluminescence to create light.

Electroluminescence is the phenomenon of a material emitting light when electric current or an electric field is passed through it.  This occurs when electrons are sent through the material and fill electron holes.
