(Newswire.net — February 24, 2016) Cromwell, CT — Each year, the leading cause of death in the United States is heart disease, taking the lives of more than half a million men and women. Additionally, over a million Americans also suffer heart attacks every year. In many cases, these cardiac episodes and deaths could be prevented.

Throughout the month of February, dedicated health care providers, like those at CT Urgent Care Centers, have been encouraging patients and other area residents to take part in American Heart Month and learn more about steps that can be taken to protect your heart, including seeking immediate medical care in the event of a cardiac incident.

It is important to note that the leading causes of heart disease are manageable and preventable, and include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, lack of exercise, and poor diet. Prevention of heart disease and increasing survival of a heart attack is possible through education, healthy lifestyle choices, and being aware of how to spot warning signs of a cardiac event.

CT Urgent Care Centers reminds patients that the symptoms of a heart attack include:

• Chest discomfort – including pressure, pain, and tightness

• Pain/ discomfort in the upper body including jaw, neck, back, arms and stomach

• Difficulty breathing

• Nausea, cold sweats, and/ or fainting

Should you, or someone you know experience any of these symptoms, CT Urgent Care Centers suggests calling 911 immediately.
