(Newswire.net — April 26, 2016) —Around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Jakob Wagner, 18, fired a rifle outside Antigo High School in Antigo at students leaving the prom. He wounded two students before police shot him.
The attacker died at Aspirus Langlade Hospital, while the victims survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
During a press conference several hours after the incident, Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller said that the policemen who patrolled the school parking heard the shooting and immediately opened fire on the attacker. The graduates were evacuated from the building after the attack, and Wagner and the injured students were taken to hospital.
According to police, the attacker injured one female and one male student. Both were urgently taken to Aspirus Langlade Hospital in Antigo. The male victim underwent surgery but the injury is non-life-threatening.
Police have not specified whether Wagner knew the victims. There are suspicions that the attacker was under the influence of drugs.
A former classmate described Wagner as nice, but socially awkward. They said that he was a troubled student at school and that he had been bullied a lot since at least middle school.
Emily Fisher, who graduated from Antigo High School in 2015 said that the students gathered against Wagner, that they had been violent towards him, calling him names because of poor hygiene.
Emily also said that Wagner had expressed an interest in guns and she is not surprised that he shot at students in school.
Antigo is a small city in Wisconsin, 240 kilometers north of Milwaukee, with a population of approximately 8,000 people, with 800 students attending the high school.
Police have said that the high school is safe for classes on Monday, and students and staff do not have to worry about their safety.
