(Newswire.net — May 17, 2016) Glen Mills, PA — Unequal Technologies was recently featured in a Chicago Tribune article on the topic of little league chest protectors and their questionable safety. The article primarily focuses on how chest protectors do little to protect athletes from commotio cordis, a cardiac concussion that leads to death. However, a recent round of testing has proven Unequal’s HART® chest protectors to be the first to provide effective protection against commotio cordis.
Commotio cordis is common in baseball and lacrosse but also occurs in football, soccer, hockey and martial arts. Younger athletes are the most at risk because of their still maturing chest wall.
According to the Chicago Tribune article, 12 different chest protectors were tested in 2006 by the researchers at a leading medical center in Boston. The study’s biologic model allows a projectile traveling at 40mph to generate a measured impact at just the right moment in a hearts rhythmic pattern to cause it to stop. Dr. Mark Link, a cardiologist and electro-physiologist is a leading expert on commotio cordis and helped develop the methodology. At that time none of the chest protectors tested were effective at preventing commotio cordis.
However, Dr. Link’s new study published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, tested many materials and showed that some of them, all made by Unequal, were “likely to be effective in preventing commotio cordis.” The new study, which was funded by Unequal, tested 12 different combinations of four types of foams and polymers in varying thicknesses. The researchers found three protectors that minimized incidents of ventricular fibrillation (the heart stops) from 54% in the control group to 5, 8 and 20%. These protectors were combinations of Unequal’s patented Accelleron®, Airilon®, TriDur® and an ImpacShield®.
“It’s a huge deal,” commented CEO, founder and inventor Rob Vito on the findings. “We figured if we can stop a grenade blast, we could certainly stop a ball, stick or hand adversely hitting the chest.”
The positive outcome of the study shows that Unequal has reached a new milestone with their products. The study has proven that their Unequal HART Protectors are up to 95% effective in reducing the risk of sudden death from commotio cordis. The company is already among the leading manufacturer of protective sports gear in the United States. With this new accomplishment, the company is expected to grow more and expand at a faster pace to a growing number of leagues, conferences, teams and players in all impact sports.
Currently, Unequal provides protective sports gear to players at all levels of sports from pee wee to the pros and including in the NHL, NFL, MLB and X Games. Their products are also used in soccer, lacrosse, action sports and other contact sports. Their Unequal Halo™ is the fastest growing headgear in the soccer and 7on7 markets, and their Unequal HART Protectors are expected to follow suit.
