AES Prevails as Waves of Climate Change Hit Texas

(Newswire.net — July 14, 2016) Arlington, TEXAS –Accurate Electrical Systems leads the way in electrical repair and remodel in Dallas-Fort Worth, but urges residential and commercial customers to be extremely vigilant as climate change is already having an impact on the power grid. Between 1980 and 2016, there have been over 80, $1 billion+ weather events in Texas, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. When all the major weather/climate events over this time period are mapped out in the U.S., Texas is at the top of the list. Demand is high and, at the very least, AES can keep the lights on during an outage, quickly diagnose electrical problems, and ensure all wiring, lighting, and appliances are operating efficiently and safely.

How Climate Affects the Power Grid

It remains uncertain as to how large-scale electricity production and transmission will be impacted by higher temperatures and reduced water availability. Such factors have already affected production at coal-fired power plants. With a steam flow not sufficient for producing enough cooling water, plants can’t operate at full capacity, reducing generating capacity by as much as 8.8 percent, according to climatecentral.org.

Solar panels, in higher temperatures, generate less power. Also, wind turbines run less efficiently. At the same time, residents and business owners turn up their air conditioning to compensate for the added heat, creating additional strain on the grid.

A String of Climate Issues Plague Texas

Further exacerbating the concern is climate-related issues are not going away – instead, they may be getting worse. The major problems affecting people, and the grid, include:

  • Drought: Multi-year droughts have become more commonplace. As a result, water levels have sunk to historically low levels, agricultural losses have mounted, and water supplies have dwindled.
  • Heat: Some of the fastest rises in average summer temperatures, up to 3.3°F since 1970, have been in Texas. The average of 100°F days in Dallas is increasing, it saw 71 days over the century mark in 2011, according to the National Weather Service.
  • Floods: Dry spells are often broken by extended flooding rains. Nearly 9 inches of rain fell statewide in May 2015, breaking the previous record by two inches. In some places recently, 19 inches fell in 24 hours.
  • Sea level rise: Melting glaciers and warming temperatures are affecting the Gulf of Mexico, impacting 367 miles of shoreline. Much of the state’s population, and $30 billion in coastal property, are at risk.

More extreme forest fires, storms, and other extreme weather events seem to be more commonplace. Extreme heat and rain events are more pronounced than ever. Scientists expect this trend to continue, and impact the power grid even more.

Maggie Smith, President of AES, said, “There’s little we can do to stop the rain and heat. Our company can, however, diagnose electrical problems before the lights go out, quickly and efficiently fix existing issues, and supply reliable generators when needed. Our mission is to keep customers out of the dark, but a more efficient home or business also helps reduce the strain on the grid, one customer at a time.”

AES Is the Answer despite Texas Climate Change

Extreme weather events, rising electricity costs, and other factors are affecting all Americans’ relationship with power. With AES, people can ensure their own properties are efficient. For example, electricity loss can be minimized by fixing faulty wiring, getting energy-saving appliances, and working with a reliable, experienced technician. AES is family owned and operated. As such it treats each customer as family and guarantees the most dependable service at reasonable industry prices. From lighting to machinery, to computers to generators, and emergency transfer switches, the company is here to serve.
