Older American Veterans Could Qualify for Aid & Attendance Benefits

According to Census figures there are more than 12 million American veterans aged 65 or older. These Veterans served in conflicts around the world including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and even in the Persian Gulf War.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is aware that as veteran age they need more care and they do offer benefits and services that address a variety of issues, including the changing health risks they face and the need for aid and attendance with everyday activities.  Aid and Attendance (A&A) is an increased monthly pension amount paid to an American Veteran if the veteran meets one of the conditions below:

 

• Requires help performing daily functions, which may include bathing, eating or dressing.
• Is bedridden.
• Is a patient in a nursing home.
• Has eyesight limited to a corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes; or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.

They also have to meet the financial qualifications. There are income and asset limitations.  Unfortunately many of pur aging American veterans are not aware of this benefit and it can cause hardship for the veteran and their families.  American Veterans Aid (AVA) is one organization that helps older veterans apply for this benefit.

Stephen Baker’s Dad is one such American veteran. “We had found an assisted living facility for my Dad that he loved, but his pension was not enough to pay for the care,” explained Stephen. “He’s a diabetic, so he needs additional attention that we couldn’t afford.”

Stephen worked with AVA to see if his Dad qualified for the Aid & Attendance benefit. “The folks over at AVA were extremely helpful and made sure we had all the proper paperwork filled out,” says Stephen. “It took just over a month before we received a letter in the mail notifying us that my dad qualified for the benefit and would receive it the following month. It has been a lifesaver – quite literally.”
