(Newswire.net — October 19, 2016) Orlando, FL — Today, it is not surprising that more and more natural alternatives such as turmeric are gaining the interest and trust of many people. These natural supplements are not just thought to help fight certain medical conditions, but may also serve other purposes.
A research study reveals that turmeric may be utilized as an insect repellant. There are many insect repellants available in the market today. However, many of them contain chemicals and substances that may be harmful for human health.
A do-it-yourself insect powder recipe has been published by the American Druggist and Pharmaceutical Record of 1913. It reveals that turmeric may be a cheaper alternative to an expensive insect repellant called the Persian powder.
The Persian powder is popular and costly due to the fact that it has a high demand from the military as a mosquito repellant. It was popular because at that time, the military was unaware of the potential mosquito repellent properties of turmeric.
Clinical studies suggest that turmeric may even be as effective as DEET in repelling mosquitos. DEET is the most common ingredient of insect repellants, and is thought to cause side effects. It contains ingredients that may be extremely harmful to the body.
In a small clinical trial in Thailand, the researchers tried to compare turmeric’s possible insect repellant properties to IR3535, DEET, and 18 botanical essential oils. It was found that turmeric performed quite as well as DEET repelling 3 out of 4 species of mosquitos in 7.7 to 8.0 hours.
Turmeric oil was also found to be effective for 2.3 hours against Aedes aegypti, which is the 4th mosquito species. Turmeric and the other 2 botanical oils were able to meet the minimum requirement of 2 hours for registered mosquito repellants in fighting Aedes aegypti.
In further lab studies, it was found that turmeric and the botanical oils were also able to reduce the number of eggs deposited. It was even revealed that a turmeric oil cup also had fewer eggs by 95% versus the control cup.
Another clinical study reveals that turmeric oil provided 100% protection against mosquitos. It inhibited wild mosquitos from biting the volunteers of the study for up to 9 hours, which may make it as effective as DEET.
Turmeric may also have the potential to ward off leeches. This ancient spice has been used for over 4,000 years to potentially fight different medical conditions. Many of its possible benefits are thought to come from its phytochemical called curcumin. Curcumin supplements are widely available in the international market today.
