(Newswire.net — October 24, 2016) Orlando, FL — Painful medical conditions, such as arthritis, affect millions of people nowadays. While it is widely believed to be more prevalent in individuals belonging to the elderly population, it appears that women are more at risk of the condition too.

Experts reveal the factors that may make women more susceptible to arthritis. These factors include genetic predisposition, biology, hormones, and obesity.

Statistics reveal that there are more women who suffer from osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis. As a matter of fact, 60% of the 27 million individuals who have osteoarthritis in the United States are women.

According to Alexander Shikhman, MD, PhD, founder of the Institute for Specialized Medicine in Del Mar, CA, and Medical Director of Restorative Remedies, the effects of osteoarthritis on the joints seem to vary by gender.  Dr. Shikhman added that arthritis in the hips is more prevalent in men, and for women, in the hands or knees.

Yusuf Yazici, MD, a rheumatologist at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York, reveals that the joints of women are more likely to move around a little more. This is due to the fact that their bodies are designed to give birth.  This means the tendons in their lower body are more elastic compared to men. He also added that having less stable joints may make one more susceptible to injury.

According to research, knee and hand osteoarthritis have some specific genetic links. Women whose mothers are suffering from osteoarthritis are thought to develop the condition at around the same age and same joints as their mothers.

In laboratory studies, it was found that estrogen, which is a female hormone, has the potential ability to protect the cartilage from inflammation. It is important to remember that inflammation has often been associated with osteoarthritis.

Menopause may also lead estrogen levels to spiral down. When this happens, there is less estrogen to protect the cartilage and thus, it may make women more susceptible to arthritis.

Women who are obese or severely obese are also prone to developing osteoarthritis, based on statistics. Extra weight may place more stress on the joints, which may speed up wear and tear. This may potentially lead to the development of osteoarthritis.

Women who want to repair and strengthen their cartilage may utilize glucosamine, which is believed to be one of the most popular joint health supplements today. Glucosamine is thought to be safer than certain pain medications, and may help ease arthritis pain.
