COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a long-term respiratory disease with usual symptoms including shortness of breath, coughing and an excess of sputum. In general, COPD worsens over time.

Predominantly affecting people 40 years of age and over, the most common cause of COPD is cigarette smoking. However, air pollutants are becoming an increasingly more common cause of this disease, for which there is, unfortunately, no cure.

COPD Statistics

A recent study carried out by the University of British Columbia in Canada found that COPD is on the increase and hospitalizations will increase by 150 percent over the next 15 years. The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Medicine, found the driving factor for this is the ageing population.

“We have two competing factors here with regard to COPD,” said researcher Dr Don Sin, MD, MPH. “One is the decrease in smoking, which should drive down the rate of COPD, but counterbalancing that is the ageing of the population, which is driving rates up. COPD is a disease of ageing.”

Dr Sin and the research team believe this increase in COPD will place a substantial amount of pressure on the healthcare system. They suggest one of the most effective way to counter this epidemic is in the area of prevention and self-management of the disease.

Self-Management of COPD

While there is no known cure for COPD, progression of the disease can be delayed by self-management of the symptoms. One of the simplest and most effective ways to not only treat symptoms but also prevent the onset of COPD is to exercise the lungs.

Patients with COPD often find that traditional exercise, like walking, jogging or swimming, can exacerbate their symptoms by increasing their shortness of breath. For this reason, exercising the lungs using simple breathing techniques is the safest and easiest way for COPD sufferers to self-manage their condition.

According to healthcare experts, breathing through a mouthpiece, against a resistance, is a highly effective way to exercise and strengthen the lung muscles that help us breathe. This type of respiratory exercise is suitable for those suffering from respiratory disorders like COPD, asthma and cystic fibrosis, at virtually any stage of their illness.

Lung Exercise Device for COPD Sufferers

One of the most effective devices for strengthening the breathing muscles is the Breathe & GO lung exercise device. A proven and effective drug-free way to strengthen the lungs, the Breathe & GO lung device is used by hospitals, medical professionals and COPD sufferers all over the world.

A TGA and FDA approved device, the Breathe & GO lung exerciser is inexpensive and ideal for anyone looking to improve the health and functioning of their lungs. For more information or to order your lung exercise device, visit www.breatheandgo.com today.
