For one thing, the buoyancy of the water has the ability to reduce the impact on joints. Water exercises may also enhance cardiovascular fitness, range of motion, and balance. Heated pools between 82 to 88 degrees are also believed to be effective in soothing pain. Since water has better resistance than air, it requires more effort from the body. Thus, it may result in more burned calories versus walking on land.

Many aquatic centers and community pools offer certain programs that are ideal for individuals with arthritis. There are different types of classes, which range from mild to intense.

There are classes that remove the impact of gravity and allow optimal flexing in the joints, which may enhance range of motion. There are even aquatic exercises that are designed for non-swimmers.
