(Newswire.net — December 22, 2016) Orlando, FL — Alzheimer’s disease does not just impact the health of sufferers but also their overall quality of life. There are medications available but there are also natural alternatives thought to be helpful for this condition.
Resveratrol may be a potential all-natural alternative against Alzheimer’s disease. Resveratrol is believed to be a powerful antioxidant, and it has been reputed over the years to offer a myriad of health benefits. This potential antioxidant is thought to help prevent the development of some diseases and disorders linked with aging.
A research study was conducted in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The researchers found that resveratrol may be able to neutralize the toxicity and dangerous effects of proteins linked with Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers also added that resveratrol may also have the potential to selectively target and neutralize clumps of bad proteins or peptides associated with the condition.
The use of resveratrol has been believed to inhibit inflammation-causing enzymes, shrink tumors, and increase the flow of blood. Thus, it may even have the potential to decrease cardiovascular disease risk.
Dr. R. Scott Turner and his team created a purified form of resveratrol, which was utilized in animal and human studies for the possible prevention of cancer, diabetes, and other age-related conditions. Dr. Turner is the Professor of Neurology and Director of the Memory Disorders Program at Georgetown University Medical Center, where his study was featured.
The participants of this study (119 men and women) were divided into two groups, the resveratrol and placebo group. The treatment group received 1,000 mg of resveratrol each day during the course of the study. It is also important to note that all of the participants, who had been studied for a year, had mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The participants were also made to take cognitive tests and assessments.
According to the researchers, there were no changes in the levels of proteins in the resveratrol group. This protein usually accumulates in the brains of sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease. There was also no difference in the amount of protein in the blood and spinal fluid in the resveratrol group.
The progression of Alzheimer’s disease is believed to cause the increase in the production of these protein plaques in the brain. The researchers also found that the resveratrol group had smaller brain volume which is considered a positive sign in cases of Alzheimer’s disease.
There are resveratrol supplements available in the market today. Some of the most popular contain extracts of green tea, acai fruit, grape seed, and red wine.
