(Newswire.net — January 5, 2017) Encino, California — Polaris Teen Center combats the rising epidemic of childhood trauma & mental health disorders using the Post Induction Therapy model (PIT). This specialized form of mental health care is changing the lives of patients, helping them cope with the effects of childhood trauma and transforming them into fully functional adults during the process.
Addressing the Adolescent Mental Health Epidemic
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, more than 20% of the youth ages 13-17 live with some sort of mental health condition, and more than 60% of teens age 17 and younger have been exposed to some sort of violence, crime or abuse. Adolescent mental health issues are on the rise, and have become a widespread issue in today’s society. This means 1 in 5 will be at an increased risk for developmental immaturity issues or difficulties related to an undiagnosed mental condition by the time they reach adulthood. This is a problem that is starting to reveal itself in more prominent ways. In fact, this year, student enrollment in mental health care programs is expected to be at an all-time high.
Today, colleges nationwide are struggling to keep up with the increased demand for on-site psychological health services and several campuses have reported large surges in mental healthcare registration, with year-over-year enrollment up over 40% in some areas. This leaves many health professionals and parents wondering, “what else can be done?”
Helping Teens Deal with Trauma: Polaris Fights Back with Post Induction Treatments
Polaris Teen Center is arming doctors, parents and patients with state-of-the-art tools and practices to address this rising epidemic. As a leader specializing in adolescent treatment, their primary focus is to provide wholesome, effective therapy plans that assist young adults; helping them cope with trauma in healthy, positive & constructive ways. Many of their patients are victims of family addiction, adoption, divorce, abuse, neglect, exploitation, death, sexual assault and or others. Polaris’ residential program has been widely recognized for successfully mitigating the effects of mental illnesses that occur as a result of trauma – allowing adolescents to reach their full potential, and live full & happy lives.
The founders recognized early on that a new style of care was needed to combat the various forms of abuse that are prevalent in today’s society. After analyzing a variety of alternative, proven & effective treatment tactics, the team ultimately decided on the PIT, or the Post Induction Therapy model, due to its flexible, simple nature.
Michelle Butler, the director of Business Development at Polaris Teen Center, explains why they chose this model, and how the PIT certification has changed the ways they approach patients:
“We chose the Post Induction Therapy (PIT) model because it is easy to grasp for our patients – it includes a language and skills that they develop, and can use long after the treatment is over. We also use this method with parents and find that they often have a legacy of trauma that they are unconsciously perpetuating because of unresolved childhood issues.”
“Polaris wanted all of our clinicians to see a teen’s current behaviors and emotional dysregulation, through a trauma-informed lens. This way, regardless of the condition or symptom, doctors can recognize that a patient’s emotions, behaviors, and interactions are a result of an early childhood trauma that hasn’t been addressed and worked through.
Kicking off the new year, Polaris is pleased to announce that our entire staff is fully certified in Post Induction Therapy – it remains one of the most valuable certifications we’ve ever invested in.” – Michelle Butler, Director of Business Development at Polaris.
What is Post Induction Therapy?
PIT, or Post-Induction-Therapy was invented in 1986 by a woman named Pia Melody, a survivor of childhood trauma. Pia started her journey in the 1970’s after discovering that conventional treatment options available to adolescents during this time period were insufficient. Together, with her team at the Meadows inpatient rehab center, she developed an experimental application of strategies designed to better identify and treat issues in young people. Pia’s efforts proved to be a widespread success; so much so that she later shared these approaches with doctors and patients around the world, ultimately evolving into what is now known as PIT training.
The treatment model utilizes both individual and group therapy sessions, drawing inspiration from psychoanalytic therapies, gestalt, family systems theory, transactional analysis, rational emotive therapy and others.
The end goal is the development of a fully functional adult rather than an adult that has arrested development issues and/or unfulfilling relationships. Key differentiators to the PIT model include using a personalized, tailored approach and gaining extensive knowledge about the patient’s family of origin. This allows the adolescent to understand their feeling states and how these states affect thought patterns and behaviors, ultimately impacting them as adults.
Conclusion
Pit training workshops are now offered to mental health professionals worldwide as an intensive week-long training course. As of January 1, 2017, the entire clinical staff at Polaris Teen Center is fully certified in Post Induction Therapy. Polaris is proof that the PIT model is changing the lives of young people in ways more conservative treatment options cannot accomplish. Despite the widespread success of the PIT Model, it’s important to recognize that is no cookie-cutter approach to therapy, and that each individual will require their own treatment plan based on specific needs, symptoms and criteria.
