Chiropractic Is the Ugly Red Headed Healthcare Stepchild

(Newswire.net — December 20, 2016) Darien, CONNECTICUT — As a chiropractor with 27 years of experience, I need to vent. I am hoping for this article to be both cathartic and educational at the same time. Chiropractic has been a much maligned profession for as long as I can remember. My M.D. advised me to become a garbage man instead of becoming a chiropractor. He went so far to say: “They hurt people and don’t know what they are doing”. Wow, that was a pretty strong: “No”.

Why is it that an entire profession is so misunderstood? I really do not think that M.D.’s have even looked at what we do. I think they rely on anecdotal information that is outdated. Look at it this way. You are a student in medical school, making your average age 27. The guy teaching you is probably at best in their early 50’s. Now the guy who taught him would be even older. So the attitude towards chiropractic stems from outdated information from as far back as the 1930’s. All without the benefit of really trying to understand chiropractic.
Now modern medicine as we know it relies on information from Big-Pharma. That should be pretty easy to accept. The doctor’s office is crowded with drug reps educating these busy doctors on the benefits of their prospective medications. Naturally they are going to come out raving. You may be surprised to know that some medications being advertised have less then 50% success rates but are still be touted as the newest advances in medicine.
So most of the M.D.’s have little or no idea what a chiropractor does and why it could possibly help patients better then Aleve or bedrest. They simply do not know that when a structure is altered it changes the way it functions. So if you have one hip lower then the other you are altering the way that hip functions. Now you can take Aleve or maybe an Advil and that hip pain will go away. That must mean that the problem has been solved, right? Or does the problem really get solved? It depends if the pain is the problem or is something else causing the pain that may need to be addressed. Most people feel that no pain equals fine.
Let’s get back to that hip. Taking Advil helps you in a way that you just take a pill and go on your merry way to Walmart. Now, while you are cruising the aisles you may notice how people walk. That is if they are not in the power scooter reserved for the morbidly obese people waiting to get their stomachs stapled. Yeah, people walk kind of funny. After years of Advil those bad hips start to wear out and they can break.
Now suppose that way back when the pain started that hip was treated to a chiropractic adjustment that put it back into place. Do you think that maybe the hip could still be working fine today? But there was no pain when you took the Advil right? Yes, but the hip stopped functioning properly and began to wear out. So when the hip went out of place it caused structural problems involving nerves, bones, muscles and ligaments. Advil cannot address the structural component that causes pain in the first place.
Now if your chest feels heavy you should not seek out a chiropractor first, do us a favor and go to the E.R. right away. But if you have back pain that won’t go away you should consider a chiropractor as a way of restoring structural integrity which will stop the pain. The untrained in structural awareness will tend to treat the pain while leaving the real problem to fester.Typically, most minor musculo-skeletal issues will be helped and should go away in a few weeks time.

Your M.D. is unlikely to tell you to see a chiropractor but now you have been educated and can make your own decision. They just see things the way they were taught and the guy or gal who taught them goes back many, many years. Think of who taught your parents teachers and you are back in the 1920’s. Come back to the future. There are many conditions that respond favorably to chiropractic care. Don’t be afraid to give it a try.
