(Newswire.net — December 30, 2016) Buffalo, New York –Noted oral surgeon and dental implant specialist, Stuart Goff, DDS recently presented an unusual case study to a group of dental professionals at Harvard Dental School. The case study revolved around a patient and her single-visit immediate dental implant following emergency room complications from an earlier trauma. The school’s Oral Health Seminar, which took place November 18, 2016 at the Dental Research and Education Building on Harvard’s main campus, brought together dentists and oral surgeons from around the country. Dr. Goff, along with Dr. Anastasia Depounti, DDS, were able to share their findings in the case with their peers at the seminar. “Implant success can be achieved even in the presence of facial trauma and other surgical complications,” says Dr. Goff. In the case study presented to attendees of Harvard’s Oral Health Seminar, the patient had an earlier dental and facial trauma which was treated by ER professionals. Inadvertently, a coronal tooth fragment was sutured in the patient’s oral-facial tissues during this treatment. Two weeks after the ER visit, the patient presented to Dr. Goff’s practice for dental implantation. Upon radiographic examination, the tooth fragment was discovered and surgically removed just prior to the implant procedure. Placement and loading of an endosseous implant with a CAD/CAM crown was then performed. In this particular case, the patient experienced clinical success with no complications from the iatrogenesis (complications arising from medical errors). At follow-up clinical visits, the patient’s tissues responded to the implant, with normal bone growth and remodeling around the implant site. Periodontal tissues surrounding the procedure sites were not inflamed, and the patient reported satisfaction with the appearance and function of her crown.
