(Newswire.net — January 13, 2017) Orlando, FL — Addiction is one of the most difficult situations that people can encounter. The recovery, if it happens, can be a long and tough journey. The good news is that there is a natural alternative believed to be helpful for sufferers.

Research reveals the role omega-3s play in staving off addiction. Omega-3s are healthy fats that can be found in fish oil and some plant-based food items. In fish, the fats can be obtained from sardines, tuna, herring, or halibut.

Malnourishment and lack of self-care are often a result of addiction. These undesirable consequences can also lead to negative mood and behaviors. Addiction refers to a means of slow suicide or self-harm.

The University of Pittsburgh researchers conducted a study and found that deficits of omega-3 fatty acids within families are more likely to produce mental health issues in teenagers and even children. This makes them even more susceptible to addiction.

Captain Joseph Hibbeln, M.D., Acting Chief of the Section on Nutritional Neurosciences at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, has spent most of his career in educating people about the benefits of omega-3s.

It is believed that undesirable consequences of substance addiction and recovery are associated with the deficiency of omega-3 fats. These consequences include depression, memory problems, aggressive behavior, suicidal ideation, and impulsivity.

In a study, it was found that second-generation rats that have deficiencies of omega-3s exhibited higher rates of hyperactivity and anxiety. The subjects also experienced impaired problem-solving skills and had slow learning abilities. This has led the researchers to conclude that deficiency of omega-3s may be one of the potential reasons why some adolescents are pre-disposed to addiction.

“Today, omega-3s can be obtained through taking fish oil supplements, which are widely available in the market,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

In a research about suicide prevention, it was found that low levels of omega-3s are linked with higher rates of depression, self-harm, and impulsivity. Other studies also revealed that low DHA, which is a form of omega-3 fats, is associated with the risk of suicide by 62 percent.

Fish oil supplements are widely popular nowadays. Its use has been associated with a range of health benefits, especially for heart health. What makes the use of fish oil supplements even more beneficial aside from its healing effects is that it contains little to no environmental pollutants.

Commercially-available fish are believed to contain high levels of heavy metals such as mercury. This is why it is more and more people prefer the use of fish oil supplements to obtain omega-3 fats (www.amazon.com/omega-3-fatty-acids/dp/B00O8NS20K).
