(Newswire.net — January 26, 2017) Orlando, FL — Turmeric has been popularized by its phytochemical called curcumin, which is believed to offer a range of health benefits. Curcumin is also thought to be helpful in individuals who suffer from heart conditions.

A study suggests that curcumin may offer protective attributes after a heart surgery. There are many individuals who suffer from certain heart conditions who resort to a surgical procedure. After a surgery, the recovery process is another challenge that patients often encounter.

Curcumin contains a variety of unique ingredients, and this is why it is believed to be the source of many of turmeric’s potential benefits. Curcumin may potentially contain anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, antiseptic, and antibiotic properties.

In a study conducted in Thailand, it was found that the possible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin may have the potential to ward off heart attacks in individuals who have underwent recent bypass surgery.

Damage in the heart muscle is almost always possible during a bypass surgery. The damage may be caused by lack of blood flow for prolonged periods, which may increase the risk of heart attack. The American Journal of Crardiology published new findings that suggest curcumin may have the potential to reduce the risks of traditional drug treatments.

According to Bharat Aggarwal, inflammation can play an important role in the onset of a range of conditions, including heart disease. Aggarwal specializes in the study of curcumin’s potential effects in cancer therapy at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

The research study involved 121 participants who had non-emergency bypass surgery between 2009 and 2011. Half of the participants were provided with one-gram of curcumin capsules, which were taken four times a day.

The participants were dosed with curcumin three days before the surgery and five days afterwards. The other half of the participants belonged to the placebo group.

It was found that while they were staying at the hospital after the surgery, only 13% of the curcumin-dosed participants had a heart attack compared to 30% who came from the placebo group.

It was also found that the curcumin group experienced a reduction in the risk of heart attack by 65%. It is believed that the possible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin may have aided in limiting heart damage in the participants.

Curcumin supplements are widely available in the market today. This natural ingredient is believed to offer a range of health benefits. Some of the most popular curcumin supplements also contain a possible bioavailability-enhancing ingredient called piperine, which is a black pepper extract.
