(Newswire.net — February 15, 2017) Orlando, FL — Rheumatoid arthritis is just one of the arthritic conditions that impacts millions of people nowadays. Unfortunately, this condition may not just cause pain but may also lead to other complications.

A study reveals that young women with rheumatoid arthritis may be more at risk of broken bones. Bone health is extremely important for overall well-being and function. It is essential for arthritis sufferers to take measures to help improve the health of their bones.

According to a Mayo Clinic study which was presented at the American College of Rheumatology’s annual scientific meeting in Chicago, women who are under 50 years of age and have rheumatoid arthritis are at a high risk of breaking bones.

The researchers also revealed that male RA sufferers may also be more prone to fractures. However, this risk is believed to only occur when they are older.

It is important to note that rheumatoid arthritis may result in debilitating, chronic inflammation of the joints as well as the body. RA sufferers over the age of 50 may be more susceptible to breaking a bone from a fall. They may even be prone to it while having mild stress such as coughing.

In the study, the researchers reviewed two groups of 1,155 adults. One group was newly-diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and the other was without the disease.

It was found that in men and women with rheumatoid arthritis, new sufferers were more susceptible to new fractures than those without the condition. It was also found that the results were the same regardless of what age they were when they were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

Lead researcher, Shreyasee Amin, M.D., a rheumatologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, states that prevention is possible if people only try to understand the contributory risk factors of fractures for rheumatoid arthritis.

Since this condition is painful and debilitating, there are many sufferers who turn to the use of pain medications. This includes the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

While these pharmaceutical drugs may be extremely helpful in helping to reduce arthritis pain and inflammation, this pain management option may come with certain drawbacks as it may lead to side effects.

There may be safer alternatives to medications, such as glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine naturally occurs inside the body, and is believed to be helpful in restoring the health of damaged cartilage.

Glucosamine supplements are widely available in the market today. There are those who turn to the use of glucosamine supplements that contain other potentially beneficial ingredients, such as chondroitin, methylsulfonylmethane, and turmeric.
