Targeting Orin Hatch and Draining the Swamp

(Newswire.net — April 19, 2017) Roosevelt, Utah — Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) has taken an unusual oath. He promised to treat his time in Congress like a deployment…not a career.

The junior congressman from Wisconsin actually had the youthful vision echoed by our founding fathers, that service in the legislator is best done as temporarily. After one’s service, the lawmaker should return to their business and district and personally experience the laws they enacted.

As a former US Marine Corp. officer, Gallagher’s no-nonsense approach and commitment to service is unlikely to be questioned. His credentials to lead are the stuff legends are made of. He was deployed 2X to the Al Anbar Province in Iraq and served under General Petraeus’ CENTCOM assessment team. Gallagher was a commander of the Marine’s intelligence teams and served as a counterintelligence officer in the Middle East and Central Asia. He earned his Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence in 2010.

Still, his battle cry for term limits positions him as a David vs. the corporate-cronyism Goliath of our system. Gallagher has joined a group of bipartisan members (most of them new) calling for Term Limits.

Who will bring this bill to the floor?

A career politician, who has entrenched himself in the lobbyist-Congressman matrix is hard pressed to push forth the very bill that will end his career. The ‘citizen legislator’ concept by our founding fathers never anticipated the degree with which our system creates empires of cronyism. Somewhere along this path, politics has turned into a career for power instead of an opportunity to serve.

That is the key issue.

When politicians run for re-election once, perhaps it is to finish specific objectives. When they continue to be re-elected, the insidious web of money and influence pulls them into a system without an escape hatch.

What’s wrong with this picture?

According to polls, 75% of Americans favor the idea of term limits. Yet, 98% of incumbents continue to be re-elected each year. This is not a moral issue. Orin Hatch and Nancy Pelosi are strange bedfellows in this quagmire of collusion. They are both powerful and long-lasting political insisers. If Pelosi runs again, she’ll be 93 when her term is up.

Ninety-three.

Hatch, currently in his 40th year, is the longest-serving Republican Senator in US History. Going to his Wikipedia page, you don’t have to be a Republican or a Democrat to realize how bad any career politician is for this country. Just scroll through the policy votes until you get to his Lobbying ties.

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) donated $172,500 to the Utah Families Foundation.
