(Newswire.net — May 3, 2017) Orlando, FL — Today, there are many commercially-produced medications and treatments for a variety of conditions. However, it is important to note that the popularity of certain natural alternatives, such as turmeric, is also increasing.

Turmeric may offer the potential to be a natural powerful antifungal. It is not surprising that there are many natural alternatives offered by Mother Earth. As a matter of fact, more and more scientists are exploring the possible health benefits of some of the world’s most ancient spices, like turmeric.

Turmeric has been utilized for thousands of years in Eastern medicine. While it is a popular kitchen ingredient due to its potent taste and deep yellow-orange color, it has long been used for a variety of potentially medicinal purposes as well.

Many of the therapeutic effects turmeric may potentially offer come from its bioactive ingredient called curcumin. This phytochemical contains a variety of unique substances, are believed to offer antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, antiseptic, antiviral, and antibiotic properties.

Curcumin is thought to be one of the most researched ingredients today. It has even been found to offer similar anti-inflammatory effects as certain pharmaceutical drugs. The spice has also been believed to provide benefits to those suffering from ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and arthritis.

While there are commercially-produced antifungals available nowadays, some have also been linked with a variety of side effects. This is why researchers are trying to explore the other possible effects of natural substances to simply find other alternatives.

A team of Brazilian researchers looked into the efficacy of curcumin against 23 strains of fungi, including Candida Albicans. They found that while it was administered at fairly low concentration, curcumin may be able to inhibit Candida Albicans growth.

It has also been found to inhibit the growth of other fungal strains. The researchers also tested the phytochemical with the use of human cells. They found that it has successfully inhibited the adhesion of human cheek cells of all Candida species.

The researchers further revealed that curcumin may be more potent than a certain commercial antifungal, especially in keeping Candida from sticking to human cells.

Turmeric can be added to a variety of dishes and beverages. However, it is believed that the best way to take advantage of its potential benefits is to utilize curcumin supplements.

Supplements are widely popularized by the higher levels of curcumin they may contain. These supplements are also believed to deliver more possible benefits, especially those that contain black pepper extract.

Black pepper may be able to help increase curcumin absorption in the body. Thus, it may allow curcumin supplements to be even more beneficial for overall health.
