(Newswire.net — May 10, 2017) Las Vegas, NV — Multiple myeloma is believed to be more prevalent in older adults or individuals who have prior history of radiation therapy. There are medications available for the condition, but there are also natural alternatives which are also thought to be helpful.

Research revealed the potential therapeutic effects of turmeric against multiple myeloma. Some of the symptoms of myeloma are numbness of legs and arms, anemia, pain in the back or bones, fever, bleeding problems, or shortness of breath.

Diagnosis of multiple myeloma is done through bone density or blood tests. Some of the treatments used for the condition are chemotherapy, medications, bone marrow transplants, or chemotherapy. Individuals who suffer from the condition are prone to complications such as kidney failure, pneumonia, paralysis, or bone fractures.

The phytochemical in turmeric is believed to be responsible for many of the spice’s potentially beneficial effects. It may potentially offer anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties.

According to researchers, curcumin has the potential to inhibit the growth of a variety of cancer cells. It may also cause apoptosis (otherwise known as cell death) as well as metastasis, which pertains to the spread of cancer to other bodily organs.

Laboratory studies were conducted on the cancer cells of the skin, breast, colon, prostate, and other organs. The regulatory molecule called NF-kB takes care of transmitting signals to the genes to produce inflammatory and damaging molecules, such as IL-6, TNF, and COX-2.

These molecules are thought to promote the growth as well as the metastases of cancer cells. Curcumin is believed to work by inhibiting the activation of NF-kB. Thus, it may have the potential to suppress inflammatory molecule proliferation. It may also cause cell cycle arrest as well as cell suicide.

Some clinical studies demonstrate the possible benefits of turmeric in humans with multiple myeloma. In Sydney, the researchers studied 26 participants who were alternately treated with 4g of curcumin on a daily basis for three months. There was also a placebo group.

It was found that in the placebo group, the abnormal protein levels have either remained static or have increased. In the curcumin group, there was either a reduced level of similar proteins, or they had remained steady.

A wide variety of supplements that contain curcumin are available nowadays. These supplements are popularized by the higher levels of curcumin and its unique properties that they may contain. There are those who incorporate turmeric powder in their diet by adding the spice to their dishes and beverages. There are also those who take supplements to have a daily dose of curcumin.
