(Newswire.net — May 24, 2017) Las Vegas , Nevada — Mel Pohl, MD, DFASAM, chronic pain expert and chief medical officer at Las Vegas Recovery Center, will be hosting “The Opioid Epidemic: How Did We Get Here? Where Do We Go From Here?”on May 25 at the Vegas PBS Educational Technology Campus in Las Vegas.

Over 33,000 people died of an opioid overdose in 2015, more than any year on record, according to reports by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The US—and Nevada in particular—is in the grips of what the Surgeon General has designated an epidemic.

On May 25, Desert Parkway Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, Desert Meadows Area Health Education Center (AHEC), and Las Vegas Recovery Center (LVRC) are calling on Southern Nevada residents to join them as they educate the public and raise awareness among the medical, legal, and educational communities about the opioid addiction epidemic, its causes, and its possible solutions.

“As health advocates in our community, we have the power to turn the tide on the opioid crisis,” stated Dr. Mel Pohl, LVRC’s chief medical officer. “We can make a lasting difference.”

The half-day event will feature a discussion and presentation from Dr. Mel Pohl, pain and addiction expert and LVRC’s chief medical officer, as well as remarks from several guest speakers. A live-stream of the event will be available for viewing on Las Vegas’s Public Broadcasting Station (Vegas PBS).

“It is our hope that by partnering with members of the medical community for this rallying event,” continued Dr. Pohl, “we can demonstrate a united front in the fight against the disease of addiction that has destroyed the lives of so many of our friends, relatives, and neighbors. So many Nevadans also suffer from chronic pain and dependence on drugs. We are delighted that VegasPBS will be helping to spread our message that with education and treatment, recovery is possible.”

LVRC welcomes any community members or persons interested in attending the event, either in person or via live stream, to register with VegasPBS.org at https://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/eventReg?oeidk=a07ee366hnx66625e38&oseq=&c=&ch.

The event will take place May 25, 2017 from 9am to 12pm at Vegas PBS Educational Technology Campus, located at 3050 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89121.
