(Newswire.net — June 20, 2017) Orlando, FL — Pain and immobility are two of the most common struggles shared by individuals who suffer from arthritis. Arthritis is a condition that is highly prevalent in the elderly population, and is reducing the overall quality of life of sufferers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 50% of individuals who are 65 years old and above are diagnosed with arthritis.

Senior center exercise programs may help to reduce pain and improve mobility. Exercise is one of the options believed to be extremely helpful to individuals with arthritis. There are certain types of workout routines that are believed to be especially helpful to arthritis sufferers.

The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) offered an exercise program in senior centers in New York City’s Chinatown and Flushing, Queens, communities. The program is low-impact and is found to be effective in improving the quality of life of many seniors with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

The researchers revealed that the low-impact exercise program has helped reduce pain, enhance mobility, and improve the overall health of many participants. The title of the study was “The Effectiveness of a Low-Impact Exercise Program on Musculoskeletal Health of Asian Older Adults,” which was presented at the American College of Rheumatology/Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals annual meeting.

Linda Russell, MD, a rheumatologist and Chair of the Public and Patient Education Advisory Committee at Hospital for Special Surgery, states that seniors should be encouraged to be active in any way as it can generally produce improvements in their quality of life.

Staying physically active will also help them function better. Dr. Russell also added that while there are those who believe exercise is not a great option for arthritis sufferers, the truth is that appropriate exercises may actually help to reduce pain.

In previous studies, it was found that participating in low-impact physical activity may potentially enhance function, pain, mood, and quality of life. This improvement was achieved with disease severity or worsening of arthritis symptoms.

In addition to exercise, there are other alternatives believed to be helpful to arthritis sufferers and one is the use of curcumin supplements. Curcumin is a phytochemical found in turmeric, which has long been believed to be a therapeutic spice.

Curcumin contains many unique substances, that are believed to offer antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, antibiotic, antioxidant, and anti-carcinogenic properties.

The potential anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric are believed to be responsible for its ability to help fight arthritis pain and inflammation.

Today, there are many people who use curcumin supplements in hopes to improve arthritis symptoms.
