(Newswire.net — June 28, 2017) Las Vegas, NV — There are many reasons why people become and stay depressed. While depression may be temporary for many, there are those who live with it almost daily. This includes individuals who suffer from painful and debilitating conditions, such as arthritis.

Research reveals arthritis could be associated with suicide attempts. Arthritis is one of the most prevalent conditions nowadays that is reducing the quality of life and health of sufferers.

The researchers of the study took into account the history of childhood adversities strongly linked with suicide attempts in individuals with arthritis. Examples of these adversities are sexual abuse and exposure to parental domestic violence.

The recent study from the University of Toronto has revealed that one in every 26 male sufferers of arthritis has made an attempt to commit suicide compared to one in 50 males without the condition. It was also found that women with arthritis are more likely to make suicide attempts in their lifetime than women who do not suffer from arthritis.

It has also been revealed that individuals with arthritis were still more likely to commit suicide than those without the condition by 46%. This is true even if adjustments have already been made for significant factors like income, chronic pain, age, and history of mental health disorders.

Esme Fuller-Thomson, Sandra Rotman, Endowed Chair at University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work & Institute for Life Course & Aging, Lead Author, states that adults with arthritis who suffered from childhood adversities tend to be three times more likely to make suicide attempts than those who did not experience any childhood problems.

There are many factors that contribute to the development of depression, which may trigger suicide attempts. There are many individuals with arthritis who are depressed because of the pain and their inability to function physically as healthy people do.

To reduce their risk of depression and in contemplating suicide, there are arthritis sufferers who turn to the use of pain management methods. There are those who resort to pharmaceutical drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Since these medications have been linked with side effects, there are those who choose to utilize natural alternatives such as turmeric. Turmeric is an ancient, medicinal spice that has been used for thousands of years in helping to fight a myriad of medical conditions.

It is believed that a majority of turmeric’s potential health benefits come from its phytochemical called curcumin. Curcumin contains a variety of agents that may potentially offer antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic properties.
