(Newswire.net — July 13, 2017) Casey, ACT — Opioid abuse may be eclipsing all other drug abuse, making legal drug manufacturers the largest provider of harmful narcotics in the country. The FDA has taken notice and is drafting rules to stem the tide.
Earlier this week, the FDA announced plans to require pharmaceutical companies to provide continuing education for doctors and other healthcare professionals who prescribe opioids to their patients.
In the FDA’s two-day meeting, commissioner Scott Gottlieb stated, “America is simply awash in immediate-release opioid products.” He announced the new training “Will be aimed at making sure providers who write prescriptions for the opioids are doing so for properly indicated patients and under appropriate clinical circumstances.”
This new reform does not come solely from the FDA concern over the nations’ health. In the recent years, an increased number of lawsuits are being filed against opioid manufacturer’s by local counties who see local spikes in drug abuse and community overflow at drug rehabilitation centers.
Is educating physicians and pharmacists the answer?
Will learning about the drug reduce its use and abuse?
“There needs to be more education around Combination therapy for both Physician and Patient- Anti-Anxiety meds.” according to #1 Amazon Best Selling of The Power of Peak Performance, Author Darleen Barton. “Pain killers should not be prescribed without a long-term plan or short-term plan for recovery. Just as in the USA, the Mental health system in Australia is stretched, Physicians should learn the benefits and value of CBT Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming for a patient’s recovery plan.”
While many therapists and counselors are proficient behavioral therapy, they are generally not the ones prescribing opioids. The amount of training doctors receive in behavior and NLP is slim to none.
The FDA may be on the right track to educate those who prescribe the drug, but without a holistic approach to education that gets to the user, the flow of drugs may slow, but the pain and suffering of abuse will still affect millions.
Perhaps pushing the patient into a Government system of using pills for a solution is not the best remedy for the patient.
