Stay Safe in Your Car This Winter With These Safety Tips

(Newswire.net — October 1, 2017) Woodbridge, VA — The sunny, brisk days of fall will soon give way to the harsh, short days of winter. Now is the time to check your car and make sure it’s ready for the winter season. Those who have experienced a northern winter before know the value in preparing a winter kit to keep in the car in case of an emergency.

Now is a good time to check the pressure in the tires, and replace them if need be. You don’t want to slip and slide all over ice because your tires don’t have traction. Also, take a look at your fluid levels – coolant, antifreeze, oil, brake, and don’t forget about the windshield washer!

Winter throws many curves at us, especially when on the road. You have to look out for ice, black ice, sleet, freezing rain, and of course, snow. Dealing with winter can be stressful and scary, but having a fully-stocked car offers a little peace of mind for those of us who spend a lot of time on the road.

Experts recommend keeping the following items in your car in case of a winter emergency:

  • Windshield scraper
  • Emergency flares and reflectors
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves and hats
  • High energy foods, like granola bars
  • Cat litter, to help create traction if your car is stuck in the snow
  • Sand, to help create a safe walkway around your car
  • Emergency blankets, smaller and more efficient than regular blankets
  • Jumper cables
  • Cell phone charger
  • First aid kit, to treat any unforeseen injuries which may occur in a weather-related incident
  • Small shovel, to scoop away any snow or ice buildup around your car or in your driving path
  • Rope or towing chain
  • Tissues or handkerchiefs

Please feel free to alter this list to fit your needs and your car. Don’t stay cooped up inside this winter, hit the road, knowing you are prepared for whatever comes your way!
